MAHAGAMAYA AND HEEN GAMAYA
A long time ago, in a remote village, there lived two brothers. They lost their parents when they were in their twenties were still bachelors. The elder brother was Maha Gamaya and the Younger brother was Heen Gamaya. As their parents did, they too earned their living by farming Hena cultivation.
In Hena cultivation the farmers first selected a plot of virgin jungle land or a land abandoned for four or five years allowing the nature to fertilize its soil again. The land selected so was called ''Hena'' thereafter, Then they cut trees and plants in it except the vary big trees. Using the same the land to protect their future crops from wild beasts.
Next they uprooted the tree stumps, leaving the larger ones which needed much labour, and stached them in a corner along with the other unused logs and branches. Another necessity for Hena Cultivation was a strong roomy watch hut. Since they had much work in the farm, They didn't go home daily. They cooked their meals and prepared their tea here in this hut, thereby saving more time for farm works. Usually, a watch hut was put up on a higher ground in the Hena so that they could have a better view of their crops from there. Sometimes they made the hut on a large tall tree. Preparation of soil for sowing or planting seeds was the next major work. After that they waited for rains. The farmers of old were expert weathermen. When they saw signs of rain in their environment, they sowed seed or planted seeds.
The two young brothers, Maha Gamaya and Heen Gamaya, having followed this process, sowed kurakkan (a kind of Asian grains) and sesame and planted maize seeds. They grew vegetables such as snake gourd, ridge gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, brinjal, ladies fingers and some kinds of greens.
When every major daytime work was over and only minor things like weeding and tending reminded, they decided to take turns. According, for a week Heen Gamaya would go to their Hena in the morning with his packet of lunch and return in the evening and Maha Gamaya would go in the evening with his packet of dinner and return home next morning. The next week Heen Gamaya would do the night shift and Maha Gamaya would do the day shift. In this way the two brothers nursed and protected their crops and day by day they grew well and they were happy.
